TITLE: Deputy Commissioner, Department of Health and Human Services
STATUS: Nonunion, Management Personnel, Full time, FLSA Exempt
SALARY: FY22 range $99,352 - $102,332 annually, plus excellent benefits
The Deputy Commissioner of Health and Human Services is a key voice of public health for the entire City of Newton (population of approximately 90,000). Serving our diverse and engaged residents, the Deputy Commissioner works closely and in direct support of the Commissioner of Health and Human Service’s vision and supporting the overall operation of the Health and Human Services department.
The Deputy directly oversees multiple division leaders, supports public health policy development and implementation, supports design and implementation of new initiatives and provides continuous quality improvement leadership to the department. The Deputy is expected to bring independent expertise to the position in one or more divisions of the department (public health, environmental health, school health, human services) and is expected to lead programming and initiatives of a wide variety. This position supports the enforcement of state and local laws, regulations and ordinances and serves as the liaison to the federal, state and local government agencies and local institutions and agencies involved with protecting and improving the human services and public health in the City of Newton. The Deputy Commissioner provides consultation to department staff, city departments, elected officials and citizens of Newton.
Master's degree in medicine, public health, public administration, or a related field with at least two (2) full years of full-time administrative experience in the organization, management or delivery of public health or health care services or have any equivalent combination of education and experience in public health or health care. Knowledge of health and human service organizations locally, statewide, and nationally. Demonstrated knowledge of Massachusetts public health and environmental health laws and regulations. Certified Massachusetts Health Officer preferred. Must possess strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel as well as have experience using databases. A valid Massachusetts Driver’s License is required. A strong commitment to public service required.
